For hundreds
of young children, Young Horizons is the “home-away-from-home,” where self-esteem and other building
blocks for future learning are laid. We serve a two-fold
purpose of caring for children while their parents work, and (most importantly) preparing children to be successful in life.
Young Horizons is a non-profit
501(c)(3) corporation, organized in 1969 as a school for children with special needs. In 1984 we recognized the growing
need (in Long Beach) for state-funded childcare for low-income families. We accepted the challenge and have since grown to
seven sites (locations http://yhcc-lb.com/id1.html), all of which are located in low-income areas in Long Beach. We care for, and educate, 613 children, ages six
months to five years old, each year.
Affordable childcare continues to be
a critically-needed service. Because of our services, many low-income parents (who cannot afford private childcare) are
able to go to work, and know that their child is learning in a safe, loving and high-quality atmosphere.
Our childcare is available to parents who are working or attending school. While the children (as young
as 6 months old) are in our care, we help them gain the confidence and skills that prepare them socially, physically and academically
to enter kindergarten ready to interact and learn.
Our Centers Offer:
Full-day, full-year subsidized Childcare from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 6 sites
Half-day
Preschool enrichment program (free) at 3 sites
Infant/Toddler program for children starting at 6 months old
A food program provides free nutritious
meals & snacks
