Q: What does Young Horizons do?
A: Young Horizons operates quality State Preschool Programs and Childcare
centers for children from low-income families, that work or live in Long Beach. We prepare children for success
in school and life.
Q: How much does Childcare cost?
A: Childcare is calculated on an affordable, sliding-fee

Q: How much does
the State Preschool program cost?
A: The State Preschool Program is
FREE to income-qualifying families, and operates from August through June.
Q: What ages do you accept?
A: Our State Preschool Program is for 3 & 4 year old children. They must turn 3 by
December 2 of that school year.
Our Childcare program serves children from
6 months old up to 5 years, 9 months old (kindergarten entry age).
Q: How do I qualify for Childcare?
A:
In addition to the income qualifications, parents must be working, searching for work, or be attending school full time

Q: Do you provide childcare
in the evenings or weekends?
A: No. Our childcare program operates Monday
through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Q: What do I have to provide for my child in childcare?
A:
You must provide:
* an extra change of
clothing
* sheets and blankets for your child's crib or mat
* disposable diapers for your infant or toddler, until they are
toilet learning.
Q:
Does my child have to have a TB test?
A: Yes, any child 3 years or older must submit proof of a
TB test.
Q: How soon can
my child start childcare?
A: We maintain a waiting list for families in need of child
care. Priorities are based on family income. Waiting time varies, depending on our enrollment. There may be an immediate opening...or
a wait of weeks or months.
Q: How do I get on the
waiting list?
A: Waiting list applications are available at our main office,
at 501 Atlantic Ave. You do not need an appointment, but please arrive before 5:30 p.m. Our receptionist will add your family
to the waiting list database.
Q: What will my child learn?
A: Your child will learn to interact
with adults and other children in individual and group settings. We provide a variety of activities that support physical,
cognitive, social and creative skills. Our curriculum is age-appropriate and is based on the individual needs of each child.
We work to prepare your child to enter kindergarten ready to interact, learn and succeed.
Q: Do I provide any food for my child?
A: No. Our Food Program follows the nutrition guidelines established by the Child and Adult Care Food Program. We
provide nutritious meals (formula for infants) and snacks for all children. Preschoolers receive breakfast in the morning
session and lunch in the afternoon session. Children in childcare (including infants) receive a hot breakfast, lunch and an
afternoon snack.
Q:
May I visit my child?
A: Yes! You are welcomed and encouraged
to come observe your child at any time. You do not need an appointment.
Q: May I volunteer?
A: Yes! There are various ways
for you to get involved. Please contact our Program Director for information at (562) 437-8991 ext. 18. One of the easiest
ways to participate is through our Organization of Parents and Teachers (OPT). They are involved in numerous activities that
benefit the children. Join us!
