For hundreds of young children, Young Horizons is the “home-away-from-home,” where self-esteem
and other building blocks for future learning are laid. We serve a two-fold purpose of caring for children while their parents work, and (most
importantly) preparing children to be successful in life.
Young Horizons is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, organized in
1969 as a school for children with special needs. In 1984 we recognized the growing need (in Long Beach) for state-funded
childcare for low-income families. We accepted the challenge and have since grown to seven sites (locations http://yhcc-lb.com/id1.html), all of which are located in low-income areas in Long Beach. We care for, and educate, 610 children, ages six
months to five years old, each year.
Affordable
childcare continues to be a critically-needed service. Because of our services, many low-income parents (who cannot afford
private childcare) are able to go to work, and know that their child is learning in a safe, loving and high-quality atmosphere.
Our childcare is available to parents who are working or attending
school. While the children (as young as 6 months old) are in our care, we help them gain the confidence and skills that
prepare them socially, physically and academically to enter kindergarten ready to interact, learn.
